Morning routines

In the morning it is important to greet students by name and with a smile.  Remind students to enter the classroom quietly and to prepare themselves for the day ahead, e.g. 'please sharpen your pencils and put your things away'.  This is also a great opportunity to show interest in the student as a person, remember personal details about their lives and ask them about things that are personally significant to them. (Roffey, 2004).

Creating a pleasant and organised classroom will encourage students to
look forward to school, arrive on time and be prepared to learn.

Personal touches that show an interest in the circumstances of the children can help to create a supportive learning environment.  For example, a ‘fruit bowl’ made available on the teacher’s desk is a worthwhile strategy for ensuring students have eaten breakfast. If they haven’t eaten breakfast, (for whatever reason) – a piece of fruit is always there.  This has the two-fold effect of showing that you care about the welfare and wellbeing of the students and also reinforces healthy eating habits.

Another example is remembering student birthdays by leaving a small gift, e.g. bookmark or sticker, on their desk ready for their arrival on their birthday morning.  Establishing a special routine for students' birthdays is an important way to show students that you care about them.

A pleasant start to the day helps build positive student-teacher relationships.

                                        Rembering birthdays and celebrating
special events with the class is an
important way to create a sense of
                                        safety and belonging.
